Barack Obama has hosted a number of events at the White House to celebrate America’s musical history. and Wednesday night marked the final one—this time, dedicated entirely to Ray Charles. The program included Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard, Empire’s Jussie Smollett, Usher, and more. One particularly inspired performance came from an ensemble composed of Howard, Demi Lovato, Andra Day, and Yolanda Adams, who came together onstage to sing Charles’ “Heaven Help Us All.”
As one might expect from this grouping, the performance was boisterous and powerful. As the song goes on, the four women’s voices blend together more and more smoothly—and by the end, as they sing the chorus one last time, the quartet gets a standing ovation. Their set starts at 2:16:30 in the video below.
